El último salto de Nijinsky (1939)

Extraordinary series of 11 original photos of Nijinsky's last jump, 1939.

The world famous dancer and choreographer of the Ballet Russes Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) had his last public appearance in 1919. Sadly Nijinsky suffered a nerveous breakdown that made him spend the last many years of his life in sanatoriums, diagnosted with schizophrenia. As he reached a state of living coma and was not communicating, his wife Romola in 1939 invited Serge Lifar to the sanatorium. Dressed exactly like Nijinsky was dressed when he performed his famous ballet for "L'après-midi d'un faune". The idea was that Lifar would re-enact in front of a seated Nijinsky the exact choreography of the master to help him maybe remember. During this event Nijinsky all of a sudden performed the exact glorious jump that once made him famous.

After that he returned to darkness.
