Elsa Schiaparelli by David Cessac

The Met’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, ‘Schiaparelli and Prada : Impossible Conversations’, that explores the affinities between these two famous Italian designers, is a good occasion to present a few cartoons drawn by David Cessac around Elsa Schiaparelli’s ‘works of art’.

Schiaparelli, who was a leading Parisian fashion designer of the 1920s and 30s, collaborated with many surrealist artists. Some of her iconic pieces such as the Lobster Dress (designed with assistance from Salvador Dali), the Music Dress or her monkey fur high-heeled boots, represent an amazing source of inspiration for a cartoonist, not only for their very graphic structure, but also for their fantasy and their witty humor.
